Mt.Maya and Tenjo-ji Temple; The Restoration

This time, I’m going to write about Mt. Maya in Kobe where I live. Kobe is the most fashionable and beautiful city, which has many pastry shops, in the Kansai region, so that it is loved by many young women. And once a young woman has a boyfriend, she may want to spend her happy time with him on her days-off in Kobe.

The best place for their dates is the top of Mt.Maya at night. The night-scape from the top of Mt.Maya is so beautiful. The townscape in Kobe is filled with a lot of lights beneath their feet. The town-scape in Osaka which is across from Kobe over The Osaka Bay is like a kimono sash belt of light. And star dust over their heads is close to them. Mt.Maya is good place for marriage proposal. “I love you, ○○, and will you marry me?”; he might say to her.



A young woman falling in love shall become a mother at some time in the future. When she has a lovely baby in her body she will hope for the good birth of her baby.

She may visit the top of Mt.Maya again, to pray to many Buddha statues in Tenjo-ji Temple, because the temple in that place is open to all women. Maya is the name of the mother of Shaka, which was the real name of Buddha. Maya is similar to Maria in Christianity.

A lady, who was once a young woman in love with someone, with her family will go to Mt.Maya to enjoy their picnic in nature. On looking at scenes of beautiful nature they are relaxed. In addition, the cable-cars and the rope-way-vessels lift her children’s spirits. 


In deep autumn, Tenjo-ji Temple is filled with red leaves. Her family shall visit there to pray for the safety of her family enjoying the present time in nature. 



Sometimes, her children shall tap the head of the frog statue or they shall wonder on looking at the statue of the elder man of a different race from the Japanese. It is the statue of an old Indian monk who founded the temple in 646, and he came from India via China. They shall feel some kind of energy different from other temples.


In fact, Tenjo-ji Temple has a much longer history than other temples in Japan. The history is about 10 times longer than the length of the history of Kobe since the Meiji Restoration.The temple has given much hopes to people, especially to women, particularly to those who unhappily encountered unexpected calamities, even the temple had completely burned and it was reconstructed. This temple is adequate to be called “ The Restoration”.


A woman who released her children for their independence may go to Mt.Maya to enjoy trekking with her husband. Longevity is one of the important hopes for them. On leaving from urban cities which imply much troublesome among people, Mt.Maya always gives them invariant nature. And Tenjo-ji Temple always welcomes them and their prayers.

She may tell him; “ I have experienced a lot of things with you, which are not only good things but also bad things like the big earthquake. We had the time when we almost lost our hope to live. Nonetheless, I learned through those experiences. It’s to live together. We often come to Mt.Maya and Tenjo-ji Temple, and sometimes I hope to reset something. Although I can’t appreciate the reason of our coming here, this atmosphere lets me be, and I always become neutral and carefree, and I always get the motivation to go forward. I am happy with you. Our partnership gets better in every way with time. Then I hope to be together for our long life.”

I saw on TV news that many young foreigners competed karuta competitions by the 100 Poems. Warikan Custom In Japan

Culture in a country is the result made by the specific customs based on the thoughts of the people, if it is true, to try to look out for the specific custom of a country where you visit is a joyful challenge during your traveling time. When I visited foreign countries I experienced the different customs from Japan and I was happy to know it. Many anthropologists say that Japanese culture is especially different from cultures of other countries. Satsuma-biwa music

Hiromi Hakozaki, who is a Satsuma-biwa player, played biwa music at the machiya of Onishi-tune-shoten and explained how biwa instruments became its present form. I want to write about one of Japan’s specific sound instruments according to her explanation. Before my explanation I want to mention my impression after listening to her play, I said to her in this way. “The sounds of Satsuma-biwa is calm in terms that it allows a human physiological phenomenon like that blood pressure will be peaceful, but is very deep in terms that it lets the human spirit vibrate strongly.” Biwa v.s. Lute Biwa(Japanese lute) came far from Persia in the 8th century via The Silk Road. The picture above is an ancient Persian lute instrument(front and back) which is stored as a national treasure in Syosoin next to Todaiji or Kasuga Shrine in Nara City from the 8th century.
